State Waives Some Sales Taxes For Flood Vics

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Victims of the recent flood will be able to save money on new appliances, building materials and furniture purchased after the storm, as the state Legislature passed a law waiving the sales tax on all of those items. “We thought the least the state could do would be to relieve what they had to buy to get their houses put together of the sales tax,” said Sen. Doug Henry, a Democrat from Nashville. Now through September, flood victims with a certificate from the Federal Emergency Management Agency can buy these items and get their money back from the Tennessee Department of Revenue. “If you get a FEMA certificate, you go to the store and buy what I just described between now and September. You pay the sales tax, and the clerk gives you a notice of that. Submit the sales tax receipts to the state Department of Revenue before October, and you get your money back,” said Henry. Anyone caught trying to cheat the system could be subjected to a fine. The tax credit is good on appliances up to $3,200 and building materials of up to $500 each.
