by Andy Potts at 19/01/2011 18:21A Russian website in the WikiLeaks mould suffered what it claims was a cyber-attack this morning – possibly in connection to a story about Vladimir Putin.
Ruleaks.net posted exclusive pictures of a luxury building which it described as “Putin’s Palace”, and within a few hours was forced offline by a wave of cyber attacks.
According to site stats at one point there were 25,500 simultaneously open connections, forcing the server out of action and blocking access to the site.
By Wednesday afternoon the site was back in operation, but Pavel Rassudov told RIA Novosti: “We assume the cause was a DDoS-attack.”
Ruleaks
The site was set up by members of Russia’s “Pirate Party” and opened on Jan. 14.
Taking inspiration from Wikileaks, which is supporting the project, it aims to uncover and publicise evidence of corruption and wrong-doing in Russia, technology website digit.ru reported.
Online attacks
Webplanet website reported that Alexei Navalny’s blog was also subject to a cyberattack at the same time.
Navalny’s whistleblowing exploits have earned him notoriety online after he launched stinging attacks on official bodies such as Rospotrebnadzor, politic groups like Molodaya Gvardiya and state-owned companies.
However, both attacks appear to have been carried out by low budget hacking teams with limited capabilities, Webplanet added.
Putin’s Palace
The images in question claimed to show a lavish palace owned by Russia’s Prime Minister on the Black Sea.
Reports of a luxury residence first surfaced late last year in the Washington Post, and were denied by Putin’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov, RIA Novosti reported.
It had been claimed that the seaside home had been built using donations from Russian entrepreneurs.
