Hide the Children! Tennessee State House Warns Against 'Insidious' Agenda 21 | Pith in the Wind

In the state House today, Republicans once again lost their laser-like focus on the economy and strode proudly into the fever swamp of right-wing conspiracy theories. This time, they railed against the United Nation’s Agenda 21.

As a non-binding blueprint for sustainable growth in emerging economies, Agenda 21 has incurred the wrath of the right for stressing the importance of fighting deforestation and other crimes against the planet. Republicans claim it’ll lead to one-world government and everybody will be forced to give up their SUVs and live in hippie communes.

After much windbaggery, the House voted 72-23 for a resolution to “recognize the destructive and insidious nature” of Agenda 21. The resolution—which was sponsored by 33 Republicans—calls Agenda 21 “a comprehensive plan of extreme environmentalism, social engineering, and global political control,” which would result in the “socialist/communist redistribution of wealth.” It’s a “plan of radical so-called ‘sustainable development’ that views the American way of life of private property ownership, single-family homes, private car ownership and individual travel choices, and privately owned farms all as destructive to the environment …”

And that's not all, Rep.Glen Casada, R-Franklin, warned the House.

“They want to cap the number of people that this planet can have,” Casada said. “That reminds me of China. China has a cap on the number of people and you know how they enforce that cap. Forced abortions. It is insidious and it should scare you if you love freedom.”

“They want humans to use less resources because we’re an enemy to the planet, if you will,” Casada added. “I’m sorry humans are not enemies to the planet. We need to be creating more energy, not consuming less.”

Rep. Mike Turner, D-Nashville, mocked the Republicans and pointed out the John Birch Society—“also known as the Uptown Klan”—has endorsed this resolution.

“I don’t think in the history of Tennessee that this House has ever passed something endorsed by the John Birth Society. Barry Goldwater ran the John Birch Society out of the Republican Party at one time. I hope it’s not coming back.”

“As I drive home today,” Turner said, “I’m going to look behind every tree to see if I see a communist.”
