Shrien Dewani case: 'unfit’ suspect works out, court told

Shrien Dewani case: 'unfit’ suspect works out, court told
John Bingham

A businessman accused of arranging his wife’s murder on their honeymoon works out for “hours on end” despite a debilitating mental condition that supposedly hampers his ability to speak or walk, a court heard yesterday.

Shrien Dewani, who is wanted for trial in South Africa, was excused attendance at his own extradition hearing yesterday after the court heard that he was “simply unfit” to attend.

The court heard that Mr Dewani, from Bristol, is suffering from severe depression and post-traumatic stress disorder following the murder of his wife, Anni, in a carjacking in Cape Town last November.

Mr Dewani, a care home director, escaped unhurt despite apparently being thrown out of the car in which his bride was then shot dead in what initially appeared to be a robbery gone wrong.

The driver of the car has since pleaded guilty to murder and claims he was paid by Mr Dewani to hire two hit men to murder his wife, a claim which Mr Dewani denies.

Yesterday, as his extradition hearing resumed at Woolwich Crown Court in London, District Judge Howard Riddle was told that Mr Dewani’s mental state had deteriorated dramatically after his return to Britain.

Clare Montgomery QC, defending, said it would be “positively inhuman” to make him attend the three-day hearing such was the severity of his condition, which prevented him from following the proceedings.
