Oh Internet:Basic Rules

The official Terms of Service, Privacy Policy and Copyright Policy is available at our Terms of Service page. The following serves as an abbreviated summary of basic rules. The official TOS supersedes all other policy pages.

This page outlines official Oh Internet! policy

KEEP IT WORK-SAFE: Oh Internet! is intended to be a work-safe repository of information regarding internet memes, , websites, and other such information. We’re dedicated to providing the best resource available for this, and that requires that we’re available to everyone and not blocked off by content filtering software (censorware) in offices, libraries, schools, and other such locations for pornography, excessive strong language, or racism. If you wouldn’t show something to your grandmother, then it’s not appropriate to be posted here. If you are sending goatse to grandma, then you have some problems.

Posting NSFW material will get you warned, probated, or banned.

NO HATE SPEECH: To add to the above, we wish to keep the site free of unfunny racist garbage, misogyny, and other such nonsense. If your employer would fire you if they read what you post, then it’s not appropriate for Oh Internet! If you insist on acting like a twelve-year-old boy or a white supremacist, there is always 4chan or Stormfront. That behavior is unwelcome here.

Posting racist, sexist, or other such content will get you warned, probated, or banned.

INAPPROPRIATE USERNAMES: Usernames containing unlawful, threatening, bullying, harassing, exploitative, violent, offensive, hateful, defamatory, obscene, sexually suggestive or explicit, indecent or otherwise harmful content are not allowed.

These accounts will be banned and their edits or contributions removed.

BE COURTEOUS: We’d like to pride ourselves on our community and build a superior community. This means that, despite having differences and disagreements, we all generally treat each other with some modicum of respect. Keep arguments civil and don’t resort to flaming in sections of the site that are not dedicated to such activities.

Excessive flaming will get you warned, probated, or banned.

KEEP DISCUSSION IN THE PROPER AREAS: Articles will consist of three sections: the article itself, a talk page for the article, and a comments page for the article. The article itself is used to present facts, images, and other such information about a subject and one should not write oneself into the article, present arguments in the article’s body, or discuss the article in the article itself.

Doing any of the above might get you warned or probated, but bans will only be reserved for the worst of infractions.

The talk page is for discussion of the article’s layout, adding or removing content, and other discussion about improving or changing the article. We’d like to keep casual discussion of the article out of this section as well.

You might get a warning for this, but probations or bans are doubtful.

The comment section is where everyone can discuss the article and its subject in a much more relaxed environment. While this section is more casual, the above rules regarding SFW content, racist comments, and courtesy do apply.

Warnings may be given, but probations and bans will only be used if other content guidelines are violated.

LURK MORE: While we want to foster an inclusive community at Oh Internet!, it is advised that if you are new or unfamiliar with the wiki format that you lurk a bit and observe others’ behavior and to get a feel for the community. While you can register and immediately discuss articles, you may not yet be able to edit articles just yet. This is intended, as there are several different levels of editing privileges. This works to prevent vandalism, as well as allow brand new users some time to acclimate themselves to the wiki and its community.

This will apply to the Oh Internet! forums as well. We’d like to discourage registering and immediately posting without reading the rules or learning what’s appropriate. This isn’t to say they you start posting right away, but behave yourself. We’d also like to discourage “hey I’m new!” posts.

While it’s hard to tell if one’s lurked as long as claimed, it will be obvious to us if you haven’t waited before launching yourself into discussions. Warnings will likely be given, with probations or bans being used in worst case situations.

DON’T MAKE WORTHLESS POSTS: You’ll want to keep yourself from making short, content-free posts or articles, circlejerking in threads or discussions, or derailing threads or discussions. As with anything, there can be exceptions. Derailing a terrible thread has often led to hilarious results, keeping the thread from being deleted or locked.

More often than not, warnings will be given, with probations and bans handed out to repeat offenders.

SPAM: Do night sign up to add links to your blog or YouTube channel to articles, or to request that we vote for you here or there, or to link to various referral scams. If you really want these things badly enough, you can purchase an ad.

Spamming will get you banned.

MOD SASS: We have mechanisms in place to deal with complaints about mods and admins internally. Calling out a mod or being a jerk about or to them for no reason will not be tolerated. Mods are here to help and improve the site, not to be punching bags for users.

Mod sass will not be tolerated. We behave in a civilized manner and expect our users to do so as well. Probations and bans will be given.

SIGNATURES: Keep sigs at a reasonable size, you may not identify yourself with the equivalent of a banner ad.

Warnings will be given, and repeat offenses will lead to the disabling or changing of your signature.

OLD MEMES: Except when writing or discussing articles about them, avoid using old or forced memes. This applies to the forums as well. We want discussion, not more /b/ garbage with usernames.

Warnings and possible probations will be given.

TROLLING: Sometimes it can be funny, and occasionally a gimmick account can be good for a laugh, but for the most part we’ll want to discourage trolling and flaming. Keep it in the anarchy forums where idiotic behavior is expected.

Trolling/flaming/gimmicks outside of the paid forums reserved for this will be met with probation or banning.

ALTS AND SOCKPUPPETS: While we may not be able to tell at first if you have a second (or third, and so on) account for use with the wiki, blog, and forums, it your behavior raises suspicions we have the ability to determine if you have more than one account and are abusing them to edit war on articles or disrupt the sites. The same goes for parachute accounts (accounts kept as backup in case you are banned.)

Sockpuppet accounts will be banned and if you continue to create more or cause problems, you may be probated or banned as well.

VANDALISM: Vandalism on any wiki is pointless, as it can be quickly and easily reverted, in some cases by a bot, so we won’t even have to waste our administrators’ time fighting it. Additionally, with extensions available to us, only approved revisions of an article will be visible to users who are not logged in or part of specialized user groups.

Vandals will be banned without exception.

DISRUPTION: Do not attempt to disrupt the site or its services using malicious links, exploits, or code.

Doing anything like this will get you banned.

PERSONAL INFORMATION: Oh Internet! is not the place to post people’s names, telephone numbers, addresses, or places of employment. We are not here to damage or ruin people, and posting someone’s information (dox) will not be tolerated unless the subject in question is either famous enough to be known by name or freely provided this information (as in the situation with Chris-chan.)

Posting dox will get you banned.

EXCEPTIONS: Some of the paid forums are excepted and the rules there will be lax. Go crazy!

Warnings, probations, or bans will only be handed out in the most extreme of situations, such as illegal content.

ILLEGAL CONTENT: Under no circumstances is it acceptable to upload illegal content such as child pornography, bestiality, or software such as warez, torrents, and the like.

Users found to violate this guideline will be banned, no exceptions.

OTHER: We reserve the right to change or update the rules/Terms of Service at any time without warning.
