City of Sydney Lord Mayoral candidate Yvonne Weldon back push to allow dogs on public transport

Dogs could be allowed on public transport - as part of new plan to make Sydney the most pet-friendly city in the world

Dog owners could soon be allowed to take their pooches on public transport as part of a radical new plan to make Sydney the most pet-friendly city in the world.

City of Sydney Lord Mayoral candidate Yvonne Weldon is behind the push to make it easier for to bring their dogs along to venues and on public transport.

'When we've had all these lockdowns, the social isolation has impacted people in such a negative way,' Ms Weldon told .

'Pets have been such a support in terms of people's mental and emotional wellbeing. Our pets are family, too.'

If elected at Saturday's polls, Ms Weldon said she would encourage the council to look at ways to make hotels, restaurants, cafes and shops more accessible for residents and their pooches.

She added it was an important step in supporting vulnerable residents who live alone and rely on the company of their pets.

Council buildings, sporting and entertainment venues and taxi's were among the list of venues Ms Weldon hoped to see pet access.

'I think we can be more accommodating, and we need to be more inclusive, across the city, and pets are such a big part of our lives,' she said.

Ms Weldon, hopes to hold a community forum to look at a health and safety management plan that could see allocated areas for pets in restaurants.

The owner of an English Bulldog, Ms Weldon's proposal could see Sydney follow the likes of pet-friendly cities such as Paris, New York, Seattle and even Melbourne.

Her counterpart, Lord mayor Clover Moore, has long pushed for reviews on state government policies to allow pets into more spaces.

There are currently 48 park in The City of Sydney which allow for dogs to roam off-leash.

Cities Paris, New York, Seattle and Melbourne welcome pets on public transport and at most venues

The council also works with animal welfare organisations and vets offering discounted services to people on low incomes, and supports women fleeing domestic violence by providing care for their pets.

The proposal has reignited a long-standing heated debate on state government policies that determine whether pets are allowed in apartments.

Strata rules for apartment buildings often imposed a blanket ban on pets, sometimes retroactively, causing distress for many residents.

In August NSW scrapped the rules, only allowing strata committees to ban specific troublesome animals, and regulate how pets are managed inside the building.

The change followed a detailed review of the Strata Schemes Management Act 2015 and extensive public consultation, which focused on animals in strata schemes.

Regulation Minister Kevin Anderson said the rule change was fairer for both residents and owners corporations.

'Research tells us that Australia has one of the highest rates of pet ownership in the world, with 61 per cent of households including a pet in their family, and 91 per cent of households owning a pet at some point in their lives,' he said.

'We have implemented fair and sensible regulations that prevent schemes from introducing blanket bans on keeping pets in apartments.'

Wound Care FEET 👣 Round 2

They are actually getting much worse but when I saw my primary care provider yesterday, she fully understood why I didn't want to go to the hospital down the street.

We discussed it. Yesterday was actually ONE YEAR TO THE DAY I was discharged from Miami.

It's really awful that Karen would send Darryll over the exact same time I had my one year follow up and the doctors feel that the construction and stress are directly correlated to the disruption of my regimented schedule and routine.

I know that it's October 2, 2021 5:30am EST

Missy and I spent a lot of time talking about using colors and lights to rewire my brain but I just can't seem to find that perfect sweet spot this morning.

I can't turn my head again and I can't keep moving everything from one room to the next.

I looked at pillows and the one gram got me was very expensive.

I'm trying to minimize expenses but I'm VERY specific regarding what products I use and read ALL the labels.

I'm trying to do that raw organic thing with honey not sugar; organic vegetables 🥦 I even got my own little Sweet Basil 🌿 plant 🪴 and Missy said she will teach me how to make Marinara Sauce as she doesn't mind cooking in front of an audience.

I've had some HUGE set backs this week. The curtains fell on my iPad and changer and several things the workman installed already fell off the walls. I had to move the bed and nightstand again because the outlet short circuited.

I keep all my super secret penguin stuff on my nightstand so when I discovered this I managed to spill apple juice 🧃 on my SIM card that fell on the floor and I tripped out!!

The amazing thing is that I managed to FIND IT, and even picked it up myself!!

The SIM card is key because it's activated through FCC Broadband benefit program.

I can't seem to figure out how to apply it but my iPhone is totally bricked now. The same one I thought I lost and the iPad is turning off and on by itself.

Everything here is voice activated and the funniest past is that it recognizes MEOW and sends emails and shit.

Cleo is very very smart. And it makes perfect sense that they keep sending me CAPTCHA unable to prove I'm human!!

Cleo and I waddle around meowing at each other all night long.

OK I'm smiling again. I'm VERY tired and I nod off every few hours even if I'm eating cereal in bed.

Rose knows this and she catches me when she's here. That's why it's so important that I have my walker at all times but it doesn't quite fit with the door off the hinges.

They do NOT let you take a walker or wheelchair in ambulance to hospital and that is one of the primary reasons I don't want to go.

They kick me out all the time and send me home 🏠 with ibuprofen and tell me to call an Uber!!!

THAT'S RiDICULOUS

Ok I have to go now. My feet are burning up and I should wrap them.

Dr. Santana drew lines on my calves and said if the swelling goes up to that point OR if I develop a fever I have to go to shitty ER.

It's the same thing I had last time. I've known that forever but insurance doesn't care if I lose my feet.

The only thing they care about is that I keep breathing.

Love you,

Bye

Who took the modem?

I'd like to know why somebody fixing the door and window would cut the electric. I'm also missing a modem am I entire system has been reset I cannot access it because you are a password
Remember all those times you made A fuss about Darryl coming over to take the modem?

Reported you for fraud the police to say it was theft fraud and embezzlement good luck with that Karen.

You're playing with fire.

I am what you made me.

Didn't have a B at five couldn't handle me at 15 you couldn't handle me at 17, 22, 29 or 39.

What makes you think you could handle me at 48?

Fwd: Reminder: Check-in online for your upcoming appointment

KAREN knew I had an appointment and she purposely sent Darrell over but I told her she could not.

You shut up at my door I can go to Lowe's and a bag of lightbulbs that were the wrong Settings and the complete opposite of what actually the electrician told me. He showed up at my door with  a bag of lightbulbs that were the wrong specs and the complete opposite of what Hector, the electrician told me to get.

Now I actually even went to the trouble of sending Karin a link to the exact lightbulbs that were needed with the right specifications but Karen isn't the bright bulb in the box.

And she's certainly not smart enough to pull this shit with me.

So yeah I miss my appointment but at least I was here to witness what Karen planned and the fact that he has a key is outrageous.

I asked him if he could fix the window if he had it and we can take some things from the walls he said no he left. now he didn't have his tools with him he does that all the time so he couldn't of done it he certainly didn't have anything to reinforce the wall so she doesn't fall on my head  again.

So I will call Eli myself and I will call him about it and exactly what she has already have it in writing. And on video.

Column: Fentanyl home-test kits and nasal sprays could save lives - Los Angeles Times

Column: Fentanyl home-test kits and nasal sprays could save lives - Los Angeles Times

Column: Think you're snorting a line of cocaine at that party? Think again

Earlier this month, in a house on a Venice canal, three people who reportedly thought they were using cocaine died after apparently ingesting the powerful synthetic opioid fentanyl. A fourth person was hospitalized and survived.

Stories about accidental overdose deaths involving fentanyl are becoming increasingly common.

There is no way of knowing, of course, but it is possible they might have lived if they'd had access to an easily obtainable nasal spray called Narcan, which reverses an opioid overdose.

Or they might have refrained from using it altogether had they first tested the substance with an easy-to-use kit that can detect fentanyl, which kills thousands of Americans a year — and many of them don't even know they are putting themselves in danger.

"I doubt it occurred to cocaine users to test it," said Dr. Gilmore Chung, director of addiction services for the Venice Family Clinic. "But we see fentanyl in all drugs."

Fentanyl, which is cheap to produce and far more powerful than heroin, can be made to look like black tar or China white heroin, cocaine or crystal meth. It can be pressed into pills and appear to be OxyContin, Xanax or Valium. The musician Prince died of a fentanyl overdose; he believed he was taking Vicodin.

"If someone tells me they are on heroin," Chung told me, "I assume until proven otherwise that they are on fentanyl. After years of using, people become confident— 'Hey, I know what black tar heroin looks like' — and you test it and it's not."

Chung is among many specialists who take an enlightened approach to treating addiction. He practices harm reduction, a public health strategy that aims to reduce the negative consequences associated with drug and alcohol use. It acknowledges that drug and alcohol abuse is here to stay and that users are human beings who deserve respect.

This means they should have access to clean needles, for instance, which reduce the rates of HIV transmission. Or to maintenance programs that use Suboxone or methadone to prevent withdrawal and cravings, and help reduce the risk of death from overdose. (Unfortunately, nothing similar exists for meth and cocaine users.) Opioid users are urged never to use alone and to always have access to Narcan. Some countries have even introduced supervised injecting sites.

Instead of demanding abstinence, Chung helps his patients figure out how to be safer and healthier, and of course, find a path to sobriety if that's what they are seeking.

"We meet people where they are," he said, "as opposed to where we might like them to be."

Thursday evening, I had a long conversation with one of his patients, Zachary, 31, who asked to be identified only by his first name, to protect his career.

Zachary's addiction trajectory is pretty typical. In his late teens, he began using prescription opioids like Vicodin and anti-anxiety drugs like Xanax.

As public health experts became alarmed at the increasing number of opioid overdose deaths, and the enormity of the crisis was becoming clear, prescription opioids became harder to find.

"All of a sudden, everyone had switched from prescription stuff to heroin," Zachary said. "It was so much cheaper."

But as drug cartels realized it was easier and cheaper to produce fentanyl, heroin became scarce.

Zachary told me he has lost count of how many times he has overdosed and been revived with Narcan; he has used it to revive friends many times.

California is one of a handful of states that allows anyone to buy Narcan without a prescription and shields anyone who administers it from liability. It's available at most CVS pharmacies.

Zachary always had it on hand.

In his mid-20s, he had already spent four years on probation ordered by drug court, though he'd never really stopped shooting heroin and cocaine. One day, he and his girlfriend scored what they thought was heroin.

He dozed off, and when he woke up, his girlfriend, who was seven months pregnant, was sitting on the floor cross-legged, her arms propped on the coffee table. When he asked if she wanted some ice cream and she didn't respond, he touched her shoulder. "She just dropped," he said. He revived her briefly with Narcan and called 911. She died at the hospital. The baby could not be saved.

"Turned out, it was straight fentanyl," Zachary said. "After that, I spiraled, really out of control."

About four years ago, he found the Venice Family Clinic and Dr. Chung after suffering seizures related to drug withdrawals.

"I was dreading going," said Zachary, who had seen many doctors over the years to obtain Suboxone. "He was so understanding. It was the first time I'd experienced that."

Zachary is lucky to have ended up in the care of a physician who did not judge him, shame him or force him to be abstinent to continue treatment.

"As soon as you kick someone out, it's them against the world," Chung said. "If you are working with them, you have a chance to get them to a better day."

Cleo 🐾

I spent an hour yesterday brushing Cleo and she slept with me ALL night so I could feel her soft fur.

Before my first surgery,  I couldn't feel my hands at all. You could have stabbed me with a knife and I wouldn't have known so it made it super extra special to feel how fuzzy and soft she is.

She's a very good cat. I can't imagine why anyone would kick her in the face and hurt her so badly but I think I know exactly how she feels and it makes it super special that she trusts me enough to pet her tummy.

Dad says you can't train a cat. Maybe so, but she ate a treat out of my hands and brings me all her fresh mousies 🐁 and presents them to me in her mouth.

I guess she doesn't realize I'm the one hiding the mice all over the apartment!! She thinks she's bringing me a gift and I showed her with praise when she gives them to me.

July 5, 2018

Flashbacks to the last time I lost my insurance benefits and my sanity almost a decade ago.

The state cut off my healthcare benefits because Karen claimed me as a dependent child living in NY and they based my benefits on her unreported income.

She claimed me as a dependent child and even for food stamps while she was living in a $750,000 two bedroom townhouse in New York.

When I went to file my taxes, my tax return was rejected by the IRS due to duplicate taxpayer ID. I had to file an appeal with the IRS and the State to reinstate my benefits and lost everything I owned.

The IRS eventually ruled in my favor but it took 7 months to get it straightened out. I was working for Tennessee Government and had a pension in Metro Governmentt in Nashville but it took 7 months to straighten out during which time Lauren was handling my accounts upon my request and couldn't get her shit straightened out to pay my bills on time lost EVERYTHING.

First my apartment, then my license because I was living in my car in my car until I got a new apartment for Spotty and I on August 8.

I got pulled over (for reason unknown) the cop asked me for my license, registration and proof of insurance. I had the legally required auto liability insurance but the dumb cop wouldn't accept a digital copy on my Blackberry Pearl 8120 and gave me a ticket I couldn't pay.

It was the Blackberry I bought at T-Mobile with the $100 birthday gift you got me during the Obama Campaign.

I still remember the day we celebrated at the Harvard Club in New York City when Obama won the election.

If you remember correctly, I was in New York and that ER physician asked me to marry him I was dating asked me to marry him and told me I could be his little Sarah Palin. We had spent the weekend in Oyster Bay and as much as I enjoyed the lifestyle I simply could not spend my life living in a Penthouse on 96th Street as a "wife" and give up all my passion and dreams for some rich doctor who was more interested in my looks than my brains.

He wanted to come in to the Harvard Club to ask for your "blessing" but after the Sarah Palin comment on our way Nazi into the City, I didn't know who to throw out of the car first. Him or myself.

Left my cell in his fancy Mercedes and the Maître d' brought it over to our table on a silver platter. You told me to remove the battery since we were talking smack about the election and you were well aware of the long arm of big brother able to activate cell phones as listening devices even when they are not in use.

We were celebrating the election results and had quite a few cocktails before dinner. You took photos and forced me to join Facebook if I wanted to see them.

Cambridge Analytica, Dad?

After the election, inauguration and transition team, I went back to writing exclusively paid per word or per visit to the website depending on the publication contract (syndication, etc.) ans got sidelined when I went to file my taxes and learned that I couldn't file because someone already used my Taxpayer ID on another return.

I learned that it was Karen and she refused to file an amended return.

Once the new admin was in place I was offered a postititon with fhe Executive Service to handle Complex Medicaid cases that required investigations and a written response from the Governor himself. So I wrote the letters, and he signed them to make it official.

When that tax snafu happened it held up my FBI background check for 6 months and I lost my mind, my benefits and
eventually my job.

Then shit went from bad to worse.

Couldn't afford gas or to renew my registration and insurance and got a ticket while I was parked AT the Dept of Motor Vehicles for expired tags the day Michael Jackson died and then lost my license for a non moving offense.

My car died anyway and gas was over $6 gallon in Nashville at that time and there was no food, medicine, electric or cell service during the great flood of Nashville since the Army Corp of Engineers misappropriated federal funds to the wrong zip code and I was living in my closet for a while with Spotty because of the constant tornado sirens.

Karen got mad that I didn't return her phone call to to tell me she was marrying another asshole in Vegas and disconnected my cell phone and had my car towed when she learned my address from a third party.

Stupid c*nt told me she needed my address to send me a birthday gift she got me from Hawaii.

Needless to say, there was no gift and it was especially curious that she only remembered MY birthday in March two weeks before her own.
She then had ny cell phone (my ONLY lifeline to the world as I had no TV, cable or internet and then she had my car towed from my parking spot outside my apartment and donated it to charity for $115.

She took another charitable tax deduction on MY car, registered in MY name and has it towed from right outside my apartment without even telling me. I had to run out there and get my files out of the car for that because there was really nothing I could do to change his mind once it was up on the flatbed.

It is simply beyond me how she manages to repeatedly gain access to my information and accounts despite all the boundaries I've put up and the number of times she's told me that she doesn't want anything to do with me and my "vicious attacks" but you've seen the videos and everyone knows she's psychotic, hysterical, histrionic,
narcissistic delusional gold digging ho and a menace to society and my health and well being.

I was no longer able to drive to work anymore so I couldn't renew my credentials and licensing fees.

The end.

Love,

Your 3rd favorite child. Not including the dog.

DailyDDose 📓 August 8, 2021

I took fewer steps today because I walk at night when it's cool.

It's too hot to go outside today.

Rose is coming tomorrow morning. She doesn't know that the entire AC system was sealed and sanitized.

That explains A LOT that they found black mold in the vents.

Explains why I get so sick every time I come home from the hospital.

Also, explains the high electric bills and the filth and film I see all over the walls and the vents.

They've been replaced but the cabinets don't close.

All of these things support what I've been saying. I haven't said anything to Karen yet because I need time off from her brand of crazy.  The only way to get her to do something is by addressing it legally.

She still thinks she should have what Rita has and wants Gram's Picasso.

She sees my illness as her meal ticket to extort money from you. She thinks she is owed money from you for only god knows what but it's been going on for decades.

She used to ask you and Grandpa Al to give her money for this amd that. Told him it was for me and she tried to get Grandma Lil's money before she died. Tried to have her body exhumed over a pair of earrings she was buried with. Told Scott they were for me.

I sent him a letter telling him this and he did not cave to her sick obsession.

Anyhoo… looks like I can finally get the apartment painted and I will pick out the color this time and insist upon it.

Here's my yearly progress.
It was going down until recently.

I go back on the 18th to the Endocrinology Institute and they will begin treatment.

My thyroid is so bad, I can't even put on the necklace gram gave me when we went to Walmart to buy me a TV.

I have to say I finally got my TV set up and I am loving having YouTube on my TV with surround sound!!

Also, never send me that Anmie song again.

I like The Stones, Beatles, Les Miz…

I do my exercises to music. Now that I found my iPhone 8 I use it as an iPod for music. I can tune anything out as long as I have music, my phone and my vape.

Love you,

Liz

TechnologyGrants: UNWRITTEN: Application Denied
I found this while searching for my old articles. They used my article as a guide for young students filling out graduate school applications.

I found it particularly interesting when I started to find this all over different publications with my name the exact words but absolutely no credit or residuals or permission was granted to profit off my work.

It meant an awful lot to see this and to remind myself of the person I used to before I got sick and turned into this horrible person.

UNWRITTEN: Application Denied

Your Name: Elyssa D. Durant

Position Desired: YOURS

What are you seeking in a job at this point in your life?

An advocacy position working with children that would allow me to combine my academic training and educational background with my passion for grassroots policy planning and program development. I have been working at the grassroots level with a number of organizations for many years, and I enjoy seeing the public realize how effective they can be in advocating for themselves. I have witnessed many people take off personally and professionally once they experience how gratifying it can be to become empowered through expressing their views and making their voices heard. I enjoy leading people on this path of empowerment.

Why do you want to work with children?

Having participated in the head start program as a small child, I was fortunate enough to be given additional resources that allowed me to be on a level playing field when I started Kindergarten at 4 ½ years-old. I believe working with Stand for Children will allow me to give a voice to small children and some of the disenfranchised families who have the greatest need for strong, well-organized representation.

How would you explain community or grassroots organizing and what about it appeals to you as opposed to other ways to improve the lives of children?

Grassroots advocacy would allow me to work directly with stakeholders on critical policy initiatives and budget priorities. I enjoy helping the public have their opinions heard and consider myself empathetic to the needs of my target audience and population. I enjoy working towards a stated goal and seeing that programs be properly designed, planned, and implemented to allow for effective program development and policy implementation. In addition, working sat the grassroots level allows you to interact with those who are directly affected by the programs and policy reform initiatives. I enjoy listening to people and helping to empower the disenfranchised populations. Grassroots work allows you to see change happen and letting people know how important each and every voice is on the political spectrum. By establishing a positive network of community alliances and establishing a good rapport with the general public, they will feel that they had a direct role in creating the new programs and policies, and they are much more likely to remain active in their child's education and community programs long after I am gone.

What adjectives would people who know you generally use to describe you? Name specific work situations in which these attributes have served you.

People often comment on my dedication: I do not take on causes that I do not believe in. I will do "whatever it takes" to see that I achieve results that are beneficial to the community I live in, the organization I represent, and the children who need my voice.

I am sincere and not easily swayed from my viewpoints. I am very true to my clients, and believe in what I say. I am outspoken. I am not easily intimidated and believe that I have a right to be heard, as do the children, families, and communities I represent. I am eloquent, logical, and persuasive. I can usually find a way to relate to my clients, and give them a reason to participate in the legislative process. I help them understand that they are a crucial in seeing effective programs implemented in a way that will best serve the needs of their children and communities. I help my clients feel empowered by showing them how their direct participation can improve their circumstances and the lives of their children. I try to demonstrate how easy it is to participate in developing effective policy and public programs. I encourage them to become more active in their own lives by showing them how important it is to be heard by their legislators, congressional representatives, and their community leaders.

I am effective because I get things done!

What would your former employers say about you? What areas would they suggest you work on?

  • "Her involvement with the class, her interaction with the students and teachers alike, and her willingness to listen while offering fresh insight of her own made working with Elyssa a very enjoyable experience."
  • "Her energy for the work and the educational process showcased both her abilities for problem solving and her well-developed communication skills."
  • "Elyssa's enthusiasm for knowledge and the process of learning impressed me a great deal. She has an active curiosity about education and the learning process."
  • Some employers have not been quite as enthusiastic regarding my level of personal involvement with my work... they may suggest I work on my objectivity in the workplace. I tend to take my work very seriously.

Please list your top five achievements at your last position.

  1. My clients still call me from school in the morning to let me know they made it there safely. None have dropped out and five will be graduating this May!
  2. One former client is no longer abusing small animals after we took a day trip to the animal shelter. He now demonstrates empathy towards animals and treats them with a gentle hand.
  3. Mental health parity has received considerable more attention from the press after the NBCNightly News picked up an article I wrote. NBC requested on camera interview, but my schedule was not the least bit forgiving at the time.
  4. New York State passed a bill for Medicaid buy-in the day after I had organized a trip to Albany for members of my community who were at-risk for losing their benefits.
  5. My persistence locating subjects (participants in a long-term study of children with severe emotional disorders) allowed for more reliable and valid results since a larger, more representative sample was achieved for the third and final wave of interviews. The methods and study results were discussed recently in a prestigious journal of public policy.

Describe an interpersonal challenge you faced with a co-worker and how you resolved it.

I learned that my supervisor had altered some of my case notes for a client file that was scheduled to be audited. After confronting him with my original documentation and the new paperwork that was in the child's file, he told me that it was critical not to reflect abuse in my client files since it would cause the company to loose referrals from the Department of Children's services. After speaking with my sister (an attorney) I decided to make copies and forwarded them anonymously to a child rights organization.

What did you learn from it?

I ultimately resigned since I felt I did not want to be part of an organization that would place financial incentives above a child's welfare.

What experience do you have working directly with children? Concerns for children?

For my undergraduate practicum, I worked as a social skills counselor in a school-based intervention program designed for high-risk youth. After working with various groups of children, I began to notice significant differences in their levels of self-esteem. This made me increasingly concerned about policy issues involved in special education, assessment, and placement. I think it is critical to explore alternative program options that would allow children to receive the special attention they need without jeopardizing their emotional development.

Have you ever been involved in an effort to change a policy or a budget priority? Please describe.

Yes-several years ago, I had the opportunity to participate in the Governor's Roundtable on TennCare. The new CEO had implemented cuts to the program without providing members (or providers) with adequate time or information prior to implementing a major change to the prescription formulary (the list of approved medications.) Because I had witnessed the fallout at my local pharmacy that weekend, my supervisor requested that I draft a written statement to the committee regarding the impact of these changes for beneficiaries. After the newly appointed CEO of TennCare denied receiving any negative feedback on his rapid budget cuts, my boss asked me if I would be willing to speak before the committee and call his bluff. Ultimately, this lead to the passage of the Grier Amendment. Grier provides beneficiaries with a formal procedure that must be followed prior to cutting off any medications prior to receiving a formal appeal. Grier provides beneficiaries with a form of "due-process" protection granting them access to an adequate supply of medication while their physician can has the opportunity to obtain the necessary authorization for medically necessary treatment.

I recently ran into the former CEO that implemented the poorly planned budget cuts. He now works at my local gas station in the mini-mart; however, he claims they offer excellent health insurance with unlimited pharmacy benefits.

Why, in your opinion, do schools, early childhood education, and other programs that give children a fair chance in life receive so much less funding than they need and deserve?

I believe there are several reasons that contribute towards the pattern of under-funding educational programs. First, I believe that the "war on terror" has misrepresented our budget priorities to the general public. Second, I believe that there is a hesitation to re-distribute funds so that they can be used in the communities that would benefit the most from additional sources of funding. Third, I think that the people designing the budget are not sympathetic to the needs of the underprivileged, and they are reluctant to offend wealthier constituents by allocating funds towards impoverished districts. Fourth, I believe that the general public is quite comfortable believing that all is well in American schools, and if we keep adjusting the SAT's to reflect this myth, the true state of education will most likely be ignored. As a society, we must decide that education is a top priority and fund education in the same way we fund the military. I could go on, but I will not!

What specifically can be done to ensure that more public funding goes to schools, early childhood education and other programs that give children a fair chance in life?

We need to think of educational policy reform initiatives and programs in terms of equity rather than equality. Equality is a myth. Some children, schools, communities, and parents simply need more if they are to benefit from the large number of pre-k programs soon to become available to young Tennesseans. We must meet their needs by matching them with appropriate programs and opportunities by virtue of their parent's financial resources. We must reframe the educational model in terms of equity not equality; all homes and all schools are sadly not equal.

I was a head start child myself, and I am proud of my academic achievements. With the new lottery in place, many children will have a new source of opportunity: scholarship money can provide a completely new funding source beyond the standard K-12 public education. We need to reframe the educational model so that we can improve the system for children who are "at-risk" of falling behind so that they have true equal opportunity. There are many new opportunities to be had in the state of Tennessee. Not only can children now benefit from the new pre-K programs being developed, but they can also benefit from educational funding that has become available in the form of Hope scholarships that the lottery program offers for college.

We need to give children a fair shot at actualizing their inherent capabilities and help them to develop a love of learning before they have an opportunity to be lost in the "system."

As the director of special programs for NAMI, I had the opportunity to work with consumers and their families by planning special events and programs. I made frequent trips to the local psychiatric hospital to talk to consumers about how they need to take an active role in planning new programs-especially if they were unhappy with the current programs in place for SPMI (severe and persistent mentally ill) populations. I was amazed at how much you can accomplish on a long road trip by providing a school bus and free lunch for all who were willing to participate and make their voice (and their votes) count!
