What the Fuck is an EFF-bot?

I have to say that I think there have been several Twitterbots created just for me.  Such as the @effbot or the @Swear_Bot and let is not forget the cute and lovable #twensored duck.  

I could swear the effbot was so hot on my trail, that within 15 minutes of sneaking in a different hashtag to outsmart the effbot; it added that code as well (#EFF) and started hijacking those tweets as well.  

Yes, I do believe I am being followed by a bot.  Does that make me grandiose or paranoid?

So much so, that I in a couple of friends to test the Bot – to see just how much human supervision a Bot needs in order to function and evolve. 

We learned very quickly that the effbot had somehow singled me out. I wrote the effbot a letter and asked him to give me the “F” word back, but the effbot did not reply.  

I took it upon myself to say #EFF the #EFF'n effbot!   

I don't know when the effbot was created (of course I am writing while the Twitter is down so I have no way of checking) but about three weeks ago I woke to find a whole bunch of tweets with the hashtag #EFF.  

At first I assumed that it was just a polite way of sneaking in the word "fuck" into a tweet.  So I used it everywhere. I would say #EFF you, or #EFF that.  And before long people started asking what the #EFF does #EFF mean?  

I got replies listing everything from “Early Follow Friday” to the “Electronic Foundation Frontier”  So I spent about 48-72 hours trying to figure out what the #EFF is #EFF.  

All this for an eff’n Bot? 

You see at first the effbot only picked up tweets that used "eff" in sequence.  For example, "I am so eff'n late for work" or, "Twitter really needs to fix the eff'n problem with @replies."

So my initial response was to hit retweet and I typed into my mini QWERTY keys on the TwackBerry and wrote, #EFF=FUCK.

Well this confused some people why was I saying the f-word in response to an innocent tweet.    Well I don't remember anything about that tweet except that someone had asked "what is #EFF?" 

Well of course, being barely awake and reading the miniature font on the screen of my BlackBerry, I was eager to jump in to the conversation and screen there some confusion over the meaning of what I now know to be a is called a hashtag) of the "hashtag" #EFF.

Realizing that people were confused that I was assigning a "superlative" to a hashtag, I decided to go on a mission to uncover the significance of #EFF.  

So I took it a step further, and responded with some = from the Spanish Inquisition: Forbidden Use of Carnal Knowledge.

Alternatively, from England where one (well, I suppose two) people had to get permission to engage in sexual relations; warranting a notice that read, "Fornication Under Consent of the King."

So I woke up one morning and saw one of my favorite twitterbuds latest tweet #EFF.  Now bear in mind that I was brand new to twitter, had never heard the word hashtag and was determined to figure out what the damn EFFbot was. 

Turns out it was used by one of two groups of people: pussies who are too PC to use the F word and those who support internet freedom and the Electronic Freedom Foundation or eff.org

It took me a while to figure it out, but I'll never forget the flood of eff'n tweets that got me through one of the darkest times of my entire life. 

Bring on the EFF-bot. How I loved thee.

People told me it was a dumb major when I chose it in the early '90's. I respectfully disagree regarding the value of the research. I might agree when I look at the negative balance in my bank account.

I started this private site after my name, ID, medical and financial info was stolen, made public in Pastebin, and sold on T-shirts at the DefCon hackers conference.

I never got one penny for the T-shirts and apparel sold and was never reimbursed for the damage done to my computer equipment and mobile devices as a result of HARD CORE hackers.

I was promised the T-shirts and promo ads would be pulled from the event and the black hat hackers known as Lulz, AntiSec, (Sabu and Co.) would take them down and refrain from using my likeness for promotional purposes.

They were not.

They used my name, my likeness, my photos, my social security number, my ID, my address and more to create a slew of fake social media accounts to post insane bullshit across a variety of platforms. 

They even socially engineered my closest friends and family members in various forums to reinforce the charade.

They claimed the T-shirts were for charity and that $1.00 would be donated for every ELyssaD garment sold.

Not only did I not receive any such monies, I am quite certain these fuckwits have no idea how serious it is to impersonate a 501(c)3.

So not only did they make a profit from exploiting every aspect of my life, they harassed my friends, impersonated an ex-cop who has been one of most trusted allies and confidant; threatened friends who dare to speak up on my behalf by calling them on the phone and identifying themselves as law enforcement. ANOTHER felony.

They made a profit. They offered a reward for tittie pics, had podcasts, comic books and sold a line of women's apparel to promote their podcasts, show and of course, make money.

They created multiple fake identities on various social media platforms. They pwned my website, social media accounts, linked in, private forums, etc...  harassed my friends and posted my fathers home address on the internet.

They altered personal documents they stole from my private files, altered them, and had the nerve to put the FAKE documents back in to my web albums and made them public.

ONE LOGIN = ONE FELONY

Destruction of evidence (especially records that pertain to employee benefits is a whole other class of crimes)

These individuals are clearly guilty, and have no problem advertising their skills across the hacker community.

They destroyed my professional credibility with disinformation writing posting ridiculous website entries that present my professional certifications as a practicing therapist to make them appear as if I was the patient not the provider.

65 "people" impersonating me on social media platforms?

My friends, sister, brothers, my mother, and even "Agent Daddy" became targets as well.

In the decades since the civil rights movement helped end segregation in the US, openly racist language has largely disappeared from public discourse.

Yet the re-election of America's first black president on November 6 sparked an ugly outburst by some students at the University of Mississippi in Oxford.

Racial slurs initially made in posts on Twitter and Facebook were soon repeated at an impromptu anti-Obama protest where campaign posters were also burned. Meanwhile rumours of a riot on campus spread on social media.

Researchers say the incident has highlighted how some people are more prepared to voice racist views online than in person. And how social media can be used to mobilise people who share those views very quickly.

Social media was also used to bring together hundreds of students for a candlelit vigil the following night. The university authorities said the behaviour of a small minority had shamed the reputation of Ole Miss.

Tim Welsh Works With His Son Tanner

Timothy Welsh is from Catlin, Illinois.  His teenage son Tanner has autism.  Timothy Welsh has survived two heart attacks and today thrives as an autism parent advocate and co-founder and Executive Director of the new organization called AutismAid. Timothy Welsh is an Autism Light because of his influential advocacy for the needs of families dealing with autism. His outreach on social media and expertise in diverse subjects impacting autism families helps him share light on autism to the world on a regular basis.

Twitter:  Timothy Welsh's handle on Twitter is @TannersDad.  He chose the handle in honor of his son Tanner who has autism. The last words Timothy Welsh remembers Tanner saying before he withdrew into the nonverbal world of autism were, "My name is Tanner!  My name is Tanner!" At the time this story was updated Timothy Welsh had posted 72,500 tweets on Twitter. A Few days after this post was originally published he passed 10,000 followers on Twitter. The following YouTube video is a 45 minute interview that David Kaufer did with Timothy Welsh for his YouTube series called "Behind the Tweets". It is a very helpful interview to understand today's autism light.

Victims of CyberBull: Defending Victims of Online Harassment

Sounds more like CyberBullshit and bullshit walks.

So apparently the roles switch quickly around here. I worry about my friends who I can see are being followed but it is kinda scary to think someone might be that obsessed to stalk me near and far.

Kinda sad actually because I'm pretty sure this is a battle I can't lose.

Jude's acquaintances are coming at me from all directions and I find it interesting that they would call me names without EVER corresponding with me previously or know anything about me.

Anyhoo, battery almost dead and I have to walk home now. Hope this post goes through because in my world, my tweetstream is all o have to protect me.

Yes, I have problems. But how dare someone come into my world and tear it apart piece by peace. I didn't ask her to help. I did not ask her to spend ridiculous money to set me up as her next target.

Because I already see that she has plenty of others. And for the sake of preserving Internet freedom, online safety and in the interest of "people like me" I will take the risk because it is time to lay down the law.

Because I see everyone rushing to help #assange yet where is the outrage and support for #manning?

Who is the real victim? Who is the real hero? Who is going to speak for mE?

Four Ways to Protect Kids From Mobile Threats

By teaching your kids some basic mobile safety precautions, you can feel confident about letting your kids enjoy Internet on the go.

You probably think your kids are more tech-savvy than you are. And let’s be honest, they might just be. But just because they’re good at text messaging, Facebook, and Angry Birds doesn’t mean they know everything they need to know. In fact, when it comes to mobile security, most kids don’t have a clue.

For example, do they know how to password-protect their smartphones so mischievous friends don’t mess with them? Do they know that hackers are increasingly attacking mobile devices, and what to do about it? Can they spot a fraudulent email or Web link? And have they backed up their data in case their school laptop gets lost or stolen?

Time to step in, parents. It’s up to you to help keep your kids safe from the growing number of mobile threats that can strike laptops, tablets, smartphones — and your kids themselves. Follow these four key steps to help ensure that your kids’ devices and data don’t fall into the wrong hands.

1. Explain the dangers of sharing personal information

How many stories have you heard about online predators and the kids who unwittingly fall victim to them? This happens because kids don’t recognize the dangers of communicating with strangers via email, text messages, online chat and social networks — all of which can happen on their mobile devices, without your knowledge.

Indeed, while preschoolers are warned of “stranger danger,” older kids need to learn that the same principle applies to online strangers. So have a five-minute talk about it. Knowledge is power, and this is a lesson tweens and teens need to learn: Let them know that it’s never a good idea to respond to anyone they don’t know online. Since they never know when a suspicious adult is misrepresenting him- or herself as a peer, make sure your kids know not to give out any personal information online. Ever.

2. Insist on protection — password protection.

Mobile devices can easily get lost or stolen. That’s a problem for any number of reasons, not the least of which is that it can reveal your child’s personal information to others. (And if that “other” is a prankster peer, it might lead to unauthorized photo sharing, bogus status updates and tweets, and the like — any of which could get your child in trouble for something he or she didn’t do, or, worse, make him or her the target of cyber-bullying.)

One simple fix: demand password protection for all smartphones and tablets. On Android devices, launch the Settings app, then tap Location & Security, Set up screen lock. Here you’ll see a choice of security options: password, numeric PIN, or pattern. (This last lets you trace a pattern to unlock the screen.) Choose one, then follow the prompts to configure it.

On iOS devices, tap Settings, General, Passcode Lock. The default lock option is a four-digit numeric password, but if you switch Simple Passcode to Off, you can upgrade your protection with any alphanumeric password you want. Either way, tap Turn Passcode On, then follow the prompts.

3. Install a kid-safe mobile browser

The Web has its share of unsavory — and unsafe — destinations. Unfortunately, the average mobile Web browser offers no protections of any kind, no filters that block unsuitable content or parental controls for restricting certain kinds of sites.

Thankfully, you can minimize Web threats by installing a family-friendly mobile browser, one that offers a familiar interface backed by various protections. These browsers will filter inappropriate search-engine results and block access to inappropriate sites (whether accessed intentionally or accidentally).

McAfee offers several security features for smartphones.

4. Install security apps

Mobile security doesn’t end with a watchful Web browser. Hacker attacks on smartphones and tablets are on the rise, and they can result in the theft of private data, personal photos, and even money. That’s why it’s essential to outfit your kids’ mobile devices with anti-malware software, which can protect against threats like viruses, spyware, and phishing.

U.S. Government Software Creates 'Fake People' on Social Networks to Promote Propaganda

The US government is offering private intelligence companies contracts to create software to manage "fake people" on social media sites and create the illusion of consensus on controversial issues.

The contract calls for the development of "Persona Management Software" which would help the user create and manage a variety of distinct fake profiles online. The job listing was discussed in recently leaked emails from the private security firm HBGary after an attack by internet activist last week.

According to the contract, the software would,

"protect the identity of government agencies" by employing a number of false signals to convince users that the poster is in fact a real person.

A single user could manage unique background information and status updates for up to 10 fake people from a single computer.

The software enables the government to shield its identity through a number of different methods including the ability to assign unique IP addresses to each persona and the ability to make it appear as though the user is posting from other locations around the world.

Included in HBGary's leaked emails was a government proposal for the government contract. The document describes how they would 'friend' real people on Facebook as a way to convey government messages.

 

The document reads:

"Those names can be cross-referenced across Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, and other social media services to collect information on each individual. Once enough information is collected this information can be used to gain access to these individuals social circles.

Even the most restrictive and security conscious of persons can be exploited. Through the targeting and information reconnaissance phase, a person’s hometown and high school will be revealed. An adversary can create a classmates.com account at the same high school and year and find out people you went to high school with that do not have Facebook accounts, then create the account and send a friend request.

 

Under the mutual friend decision, which is where most people can be exploited, an adversary can look at a targets friend list if it is exposed and find a targets most socially promiscuous friends, the ones that have over 300-500 friends, friend them to develop mutual friends before sending a friend request to the target.

 

To that end friend’s accounts can be compromised and used to post malicious material to a targets wall. When choosing to participate in social media an individual is only as protected as his/her weakest friend."

Other documents in the leaked emails include quotes from HBGary CEO Aaron Barr saying,

"There are a variety of social media tricks we can use to add a level of realness to all fictitious personas... Using hashtags and gaming some location based check-in services we can make it appear as if a persona was actually at a conference and introduce himself/herself to key individuals as part of the exercise, as one example."

Additional emails between HBGary employees, usually originating from Barr, discuss the vulnerability social networking causes.

One employee wrote,

"and now social networks are closing the gap between attacker and victim, to the point I just found (via linked-in) 112 females, wives of service men, all stationed at Hurlbert Field FL - in case you don't know this is where the CIA flies all their "private" airlines out of. What a damn joke - the U.S. is no longer the super power in cyber, and probably won't be in other areas soon."

Barr also predicted a steady rise in clandestine or secret government operations to stem the flow of sensitive information.

"I would say there is going to be a resurgence of black ops in the coming year as decision makers settle with our inadequacies... Critical infrastructure, finance, defense industrial base, and government have rivers of unauthorized communications flowing from them and there are no real efforts to stop it."

The creation of internet propaganda software is only one of HBGary's controversial activities.

 

According to Wikileaks competitor and occasional collaborator Cryptome.org, several other progressive organizations were intended to be targeted including,

• anti-war activist

• anti-torture organizations

• groups opposed to the US Chamber of Commerce
